Title: Untitled 01 Medium: Acrylic on canvas with found and made objects. Approx. dimensions in cm: Boxing Ring 130 x 190 x 48, Chair: 60 x 40 x 40, Canvas: 250 x 180, Mirrors x 2: 60 x 90 Price: £2800.00 Year made: 2009. .About the work: The work is compromised of a 1/6 scale boxing ring, single chair and two mirrors one within a painted text on canvas, the text relating to the violence and oppression present in language. The cushions in the corners of the boxing rings are phallic symbols, tied to the corners, questioning a controlled form of enjoying male aggression. The ties constraining the phalluses point to governing rules; as we are all governed by regulation in an attempt to construct a safe, open and fair society. The single chair locates the actuality that it would be unusual for one person to pay two men to come into their home and watch them have a bloody physical fight, and so what an audience does at an event is legitimize your decision to watch a violent act, and so television and other medias as well as providing and recording the ‘entertainment’ also provides the legitimizing effect of the audience as we assume others are watching and so we watch more comfortably in our own home demonstrating the power of all contemporary Medias to describe and influence much of contemporary culture. The work is shown in a room with one door, and should be viewed only one at a time. Viewers are encouraged to sit on the chair, positioned so that the viewer appears in the mirror as they read the text; the viewer’s image is perceived within the text but distinct from it. As beings we preceded language but we now require language to understand who and what we are, the times we live in and the future. The text for this work I discovered in a small book "The Missing Text" a compilation of essays edited by Marysia Lewandowska. Published by Chance Books of London , 1991. This text in the work is a short extract from the essay "Distant Voices, Real Lives" by Graham McCann and is reproduced in the work with his kind permission. Many aspects of language are examined in the book and is well worth a read. The work is available for delivery in the UK only, carriage price includes installation. Packaging and delivery charges (additional to purchase price) :
