The idea explored that led to the making of this piece was to establish an insight into how we retain images in the mind.

There is only one pebble in this painting which is real, the rest, whilst painted with reference to actual pebbles for colour and texture are imaginary,

Much detailed work went into the piece but even as the artist I cannot pick out or see individual pebbles from memory, I can with the image in front of me. Yet when I close my eyes I can see the painting in its entirety. As soon as I try to picture individual pebbles or sections of the work I am in trouble, I cannot see individual pebbles without reference to the actual painting.

So what am I remembering when I see the painting in my mind? It seems like the painting, yet it is not, it dissapears as soon as I try to locate individual sections of the image.

The Burden's Open is named after  Burdens Agricultural Suppliers in Lincolnshire, a large industrial company who have sponsored this art prize for ten years.
