Title: Silent Voices. Motifs recorded on the grave of Oscar Wilde Monday 10th of November 2008, 11.42am, Cimetiere Du Pere Lachaise, Paris. Medium: Acrylic on aluminium. Dimensions in cm: 90.2 x 100 Price on collection from studio: Sold Year made: 2009. About the work: The monument marking the grave of Oscar Wilde is shrouded with many lip marks, rendered in lipstick by devotees kissing the stone. The five sets of lips in the work were recorded on Monday 10th of November 2008, at 11.42am in the Cimetiere Du Pere Lachaise Paris, France. They document the personal feelings (silent voices) of the authors; they are placed into the world for an audience with humanity. In the context of the graveyard confronted with their own mortality viewers hear their own silent voices as they contemplate the complex set of relationships between our adulation of greatness, celebrity, and feelings of longing, hope and despair. These intense feelings when articulated are diminished; the lips enable us to better hear the ‘silent voices’ within. |
